Greensky Bluegrass

The Gnometown gang caught Greensky Bluegrass at the Orange Peel on Friday night, 9/25. Marie told me during the set break that she saw the lyrics to Lucy In The Sky backstage, so I was ready to capture it on video. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

Donna The Buffalo at The Orange peel

On Friday, January 23, Donna the Buffalo performed at the Orange Peel. This has been an annual event for several years now, and falls during the week of my birthday, so it is always an event that I forward to.
The Binghampton, NY band "Deadwood" opened the show.

Railroad Earth Orange Peel Show

We had a great time at the Orange Peel on Friday night with family and friends and a packed to the rafters sold-out Railroad Earth show. It looks like Asheville is finally hopping on the Hobo train and discovering what we knew all along--that RRE is the one of the hottest and most talented bands touring today. The raw energy was unmistakable. The music, as always, was ass-kicking.

Asheville was well represented with a couple of special guests during the show. It was a special treat to see our banjo playing buddy, Jason Flournoy join in on a jam at the end of the 2nd set. After that, Justin Perkins of Toubab Krewe came out for the encore with his Kora and jammed with the boys to Goat.
That's something you don't get to see every day.

There was no opening band and RRE played two full sets. We certainly got our money's worth, as always. I was so stoked that I could have gone on for another two sets, no problem! This may have been my favorite RRE show yet!

Set One
Head
Cold Water
Old Man and the Land
Gold Rush
The Cuckoo
Black Elk Speaks
The Man Who Invented Sin>

Set Two

Donna The Buffalo at The Orange Peel

Black Betty and I got our groove on at one hell of
a Donna The Buffalo show last night at the Orange
Peel. This week is being celebrated as The
Birthday Week of Carolina resident and
                     keyboardist extraordinaire Dave McCracken.
Although, and I kid you not, at one point he
actually had a cordless drill out on stage while
the rest of the band was playing, in an attempt to
repair a broken component of his rode-hard and
                     road-weary organ.
McCracken persevered as he always manages
to do and ended the night by fueling an insanely
scorching hot jam during a blistering encore
rendition of Hot Tamale Baby which stampeded
the herd in a hoof hopping, buffalo boogie frenzy.

I've said it before, Donna the Buffalo is hot, hot,
                     hot, right now.
The planets are in perfect "Donna" alignment.
See 'em now, don't miss 'em!

Greensky Bluegrass and Railroad Earth @ The Orange Peel

Black Betty and I got to see two of the hottest Americana jam bands touring today when they rolled into Asheville last night.

Greensky Bluegrass opened for Railroad Earth at The Orange Peel and got the crowd warmed up for a scorching hot show on a cold Friday night.
Here is a recording of their set on Archive; Greensky Bluegrass.

Railroad Earth started the first set with a heavy electric bass intro by Andrew Altman with the Happy Song. Other first set highlights included a crowd-favorite Like A Buddha and ended with Lone Croft Farewell.
Set two featured the latest RRE sing-a-long, The Jupiter and the 119, and an epic and wonderfully jammy masterpiece Warhead Boogie, which really managed to get the whole house rockin' without restraint.
Here is a link to their show on Archive: Railroad Earth.

It was another fine night of listening to some of the best live music in the world delivered right to my door step in Western North Carolina. How lucky is that?

Donna the Buffalo and The Believers at The Orange Peel

Black Betty and I headed to Asheville after work on Thursday to see Donna the Buffalo at the Orange Peel. It's tough to make the call to go out and boogie after working a twelve hour shift, but we were both ready to see some live music and we do love DtB.
(Besides, BB was the one who had to get up and go to work on Friday, not me).

It was a great call and we were not disappointed. The Believers opened the show and they rocked the house. Donna the Buffalo were great as usual and it was Dave McCracken's (keyboards) birthday to add to the fun. Jeb and Tara were smiling, the crowd was intimate and friendly. What's not to love about a Thursday night in Asheville?

Railroad Earth // For Love

Railroad Earth gave a stellar performance at the Orange Peel on Friday. The Chicago grass band, Cornmeal (driven by fiddle player Allie Kral) opened with lots of energy and then we were treated by two full sets of pure jamgrass bliss by an inspired and awesome Railroad Earth. It was a hobo's delight, for sure!
I was fortunate enough to video a couple of minutes of Todd Sheaffer singing Robert Earl Keen's "For Love". If I could have requested a song, this would have been it, I must be living right!

The tapers already have the show up on archive, check out the twin fiddles of Tim Carbone and Allie Kral on Cuckoo's Medley for a special treat:

Todd Snider at the Orange Peel

I'm really behind in my posting, and Black Betty and I have seen tons of good music this month. I'll try to catch up as I can get videos loaded in the next week or two.

We caught the barefooted Todd Snider at the Orange Peel on July 17th. We absolutely love his music and we were treated to a killer show with just Todd, his guitar, and a room full of his loyal Asheville fans! Sweet!

David Bromberg at the Orange Peel

We went to see David Bromberg play at the Orange Peel on Thursday night. It was a thrill for me and Black Betty. I have been a huge fan since the 70's and we never got the opportunity to see him live, and then of course he "dropped out" for twenty-two years. You know, he was really good, engaging as ever, and he played to a crowd of true fans who not only appreciated him, they really loved him. It was honor to be there!

Friday, I was interviewed by the Franklin Press about my AT thru-hike. I felt like a babbling idiot, we'll hope it doesn't translate that way into print. I'd hate to embarrass my family:(

Tomorrow is my Birthday. I'm working (as is my custom). I'll celebrate by going out with the fam for supper:)

Here's a new posted video of Larry Keel, enjoy...............................
